This book is a look at the narrow gauge railways that operated on the island of Ireland. Published in 1946, quite a few of these were still running when the book was written. The primary part of the text relates to locomotives and rolling stock. However, each company is given its own section and this starts off with a brief history and details of any significant engineering features. A map of the line is also given. Of particular interest is an entire chapter devoted to the early 20th Century folly proposal, the Ulster & Connaught Light Railway. This was a plan for a narrow gauge railway from Greenore, Co. Louth, to Clifden, Co. Galway via Newry, Keady, Tynan, Maguiresbridge, Bawnboy Road, Dromod, Rooskey, Tuam and Cong. The only feature of this ever built was the tunnel at Keady, under the then being constructed line from Castleblayney to Armagh.
